Ruth Handler is credited for the making of Barbie. She was inspired by her daughter. Her child had no doll that was more adult like. She claimed it was a good idea for girls to play with dolls that had breasts. She approached her husband (the co-founder of Mattel) but he declined saying that it would not sell. While on vacation Ruth came across the Build Lilli Doll in a Swiss Store. She brought the doll home, re worked her a bit and it became Barbie.
Barbie made her debut at the Toy Fair in 1959 and the rest is Barbie history. She originally wore a black and white swimsuit. Later Barbie would meet her long time boyfriend Ken the two broke up in 2004 but are currently back on. Over the years subtle changes have been made to Barbie. Find the perfect Barbie at this Collectible Doll Boutique.
In 1971 she began looking forward as opposed to the sideway glance. In more recent years Barbie has put on some weight around her waist and her breast measurements are slightly smaller. Barbie also has many friends. She has Teresa, Midge and Christie.
Like any popular item or person Barbie has invited some criticisms and controversies. Saudi Arabia has outlawed the doll. Many women`s groups and activists have taken issue with Barbie`s measurements. 1965`s Slumber Party doll came with a book telling girls not to eat to lose weight. Despite all the changes and controversies Barbie remains a popular item with children. They area also quite the collector`s item.
